My goal is to ensure the signing goes as smoothly as possible. I have listed below some of the common areas which cause documents not to be able to be notarized. If you have a question please call me ahead of time. I will provide the answer, or direct you as best I can where to go to obtain the answer.
Inappropriate Internet Documents
While it is possible to get appropriate documents off the internet, most of them I see are not valid in PA or not executed properly. Not being an attorney, I cannot discuss this with clients. What I can do is remedy the situation, so I now offer affordable attorney created, Pennsylvania appropriate documents (see Wills page). Available within hours.
Notarial Wording
Documents being notarized need to have specific notarial wording for a valid notarization. If there is no notarial wording on your document, you must choose which form to use. While I carry forms with appropriate wording for different types of notarizations, I cannot advise you on which form is appropriate for your document. If you are not sure what type of notarial certificate is needed, contact the author of the document, or the document recipient, and speak to them about which form is needed.
Witnesses
The best practice for Estate Planning documents is to have two (2) witnesses who are not beneficiaries or agents of the document, in addition to the notary. Witnesses must be over 18 and of sound mind. Most healthcare institutions do not allow employees to act as witnesses for signings. I may be able to provide witnesses if needed. Check with me for the fee if you would like me to arrange witnesses.
If you are unsure, we can provide documents. Otherwise, we suggest you contact the author of the document, or document recipient, for specific information on what type of witnessing is needed for validation.
Identification
Pennsylvania requires signers and witnesses to appear personally in front of the notary and be identified through a current, government-issued identification card bearing a photograph, signature or physical description and serial or identification number. Most often a driver’s license, PA non-driver ID, passport, LTCF, or other current State issued ID.
Sometimes the ID of a resident in a facility has expired. If this is the case, please call me prior to the appointment for options. I can often use an alternate method to have the notarization completed.
Copies
I am happy to print or make copies of Estate Planning documents (Wills / POA’s) prior to the appointment if needed. Please contact me to see if there will be a fee (dependent on number of pages needed).
Please Note: If, at the appointment, the document(s) cannot be notarized the Administrative Fee will still be due.
